The uneven latest from Baker (Keeping the House) poses questions about adoption and family heritage. In a small town in Minnesota in 2015, Cecily Larson, 94, breaks her hip and, confined to a hospital bed, realizes time may be running out to share the secret she’s kept for her entire life, which stems from her childhood. At age seven, Cecily was taken from a Chicago orphanage to be trained as a bareback rider in a traveling circus. Baker makes clear that the secret, which is revealed to the reader later on, will impact Cecily’s widowed daughter Liz, her divorced granddaughter Molly, and her teenage grandson Caden, who has just started a research project on his family’s DNA. At the same time in Florida and North Carolina, members of another branch of the Larson family are wondering about their own mysterious family history and start taking DNA tests. Cecily’s circus life provides plenty of colorful drama, but subplots involving Molly’s lingering ambivalence about her divorce years earlier and Liz’s cancer diagnosis are tied up too quickly in the rushed final act, and the conclusion is too convenient to be convincing. Cassandra Campbell brings her usual insightful delivery to Baker's multilayered family drama. Campbell is an experienced, steady narrator with a smooth, consistent delivery. She adds nuance to Cecily Larson, subtly aging her from the 4-year-old who's been deserted by her mother, through growing up and adulthood, and ending with the 94-year-old matriarch whose "hidden life" is about to be exposed by her great-grandson's DNA project. Secondary characters have less uniqueness to their voices. As the story moves back and forth in time and between two seemingly unconnected families, it is incumbent upon the listener to give 110 percent of their attention to the plot and characters. Baker's (I Gave My Heart To Know This) latest historical novel follows Cecily Larson, who was abandoned at an orphanage at the age of four and sold to a circus when she was just seven. Trained as a bareback rider, Cecily flourishes at the circus, but a forbidden love and unplanned pregnancy upend her life. Later, in 2015, her grandson's DNA school project prompts 94-year-old Cecily to reveal long-buried family secrets. Narrator Cassandra Campbell modulates her voice, enhancing the unique personalities Baker gives to each character in this dual-timeline novel. Of particular note is Campbell's portrayal of young Cecily, whose fragility and innocence transform into resilience and strength. Though listeners will have to keep track of multiple storylines, including a range of characters and some shocking reveals, Campbell's consistent, sensitive narration is a steadying presence. Intergenerational legacies, unexpected DNA test results, and a fascinating glimpse into 1920s circus life make for a gripping, if occasionally heartbreaking listen. VERDICT Tumultuous, beautifully described historical fiction for fans of Sara Gruen's Water for Elephants, Christina Baker Kline's Orphan Train, and Gary Jennings's "Spangle" series.--David Faucheux
