"A world-class whodunit." —Stephen King

"Laugh-out-loud funny, thrilling and twisty..." —Liane Moriarty, #1 New York Times bestselling author

What if you thought you murdered your best friend? And if everyone else thought so too? And what if the truth doesn't matter?
After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy's blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It's been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can't remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.
But now the phenomenally huge hit true crime podcast "Listen for the Lie," and its too-good looking host Ben Owens, have decided to investigate Savvy's murder for the show's second season. Lucy is forced to return to the place she vowed never to set foot in again to solve her friend's murder, even if she is the one that did it.
The truth is out there, if we just listen.

"A lot of thrillers these days use the murder podcast as a plot device. This production simulates one better than any audiobook I've listened to, to an often hilarious effect. Also, January LaVoy expertly voices one of Lucy's funniest tics: imagining how she would murder nearly every person with whom she comes in contact." —Vulture
"Narrator January LaVoy is a treat to listen to, as she gives Lucy the sardonic tone she needs as she grapples with life. LaVoy is also a genius in the way she gives life to Lucy's inner voice—a psychological shoulder demon who wants to solve every issue with ... "let's kill him." —The Berkshire Eagle
"Narrator LaVoy absolutely shines as the broken yet charmingly cheeky heroine. Her tale is organically intermixed with podcast excerpts delivered in honeyed and wry tones by Will Damron, each bookended by delightful 'podcasty' melodies." —Booklist

    • Amy Tintera is the New York Times bestselling author of several series for young adults. She earned degrees in journalism and film and worked in Hollywood before becoming an author. Raised in Austin, Texas, she frequently sets her novels in the Lone Star State, but she now lives in Los Angeles, where there's far less humidity but not nearly enough Tex-Mex. Listen for the Lie is her adult debut.

YA author Tintera (The Q) makes her adult debut with the outstanding story of a young woman haunted by rumors that she killed her best friend. Five years ago, 20-something golden girl Savannah Harper was brutally murdered in her hometown of Plumpton, Tex. The same day, Savannah’s best friend, Lucy Chase, was discovered amnesia-stricken on the side of the road with her dress covered in Savannah’s blood. While Lucy was never charged with the murder, most of Plumpton has long assumed she’s guilty—and given the gap in her memory, Lucy has questions of her own. Now living in L.A., she’s fired from her investment job when the new season of hit true crime podcast Listen for the Lie renews public interest in Savannah’s case. Humiliated, Lucy accepts an invitation from her grandmother, Beverly, to return to Plumpton for a visit. When Lucy arrives in town, she finds Ben Owens, the charismatic host of Listen for the Lie, already poking around, and attempts to stay one step ahead of him as she pieces together the events of that fateful night. Tintera alternates transcripts of the podcast with chapters from Lucy’s perspective, getting a lot of mileage from her protagonist’s dry wit (“A podcaster has decided to ruin my life, so I’m buying a chicken,” goes the book’s first sentence) and some devilish plot twists. Readers will be hard-pressed not to wolf down this intelligent page-turner in a single sitting.

    • AudioFile Magazine January LaVoy and Will Damron give sterling performances in this audiobook about a woman who is suspected of committing a murder five years earlier and the popular true-crime podcaster who exposes her. LaVoy is simply outstanding as the often funny Lucy Chase; she adopts a sardonic, fatalistic tone that matches Lucy's character. LaVoy also is great in supporting roles, employing accents that reflect the small-town Texas setting of the story. Damron, as the fine-looking, deep-voiced podcaster Ben Owens, also is top-notch. The podcast episodes sound authentic, and Damron also brings a Texas twang when that is needed. This is an excellent, fun listen, filled with unusual and relatable characters. Listeners looking for a grin will enjoy it. G.S. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine

While a podcast might not have ruined Lucy's life, it certainly didn't do her any favors. When a popular podcast starts investigating her best friend's unsolved murder--the one in which Lucy was a prime suspect--she is suddenly thrust into the spotlight. Finding herself summarily fired and dumped, she has little choice but to return to the small Texas town where it all went down five years ago. With no memory of the night in question, Lucy isn't even sure of her own innocence, and her friends and family certainly seem willing to believe she's the murderer. As events of that evening start returning to her in disturbing flashes, Lucy realizes that looking for answers was a dangerous decision. Tintera (The Q) crafts a compelling suspense novel full of tension and twists. Narrator January LaVoy portrays Lucy's first-person perspective across dual timelines in an expressive and atmospheric performance, while Will Damron presents each podcast episode, complete with theme music. VERDICT This audio will appeal to listeners seeking intricate, intense psychological suspense about missing memories and murder. Recommended for fans of Lisa Jewell, Emily Schultz, and Ashley Flowers.--Lauren Hackert
