Reid’s darkly enchanting second fairy tale retelling (after The Wolf and the Woodsman) takes on “The Juniper Tree.” Zmiy Vashchenko is the last true wizard in Oblya, and he keeps his three witch-daughters locked away in their crumbling home. The only people the women are allowed to interact with are the clients who pay for their respective powers. Undine sees people’s futures in her scrying pool; Rosenrot is an herbalist who creates healing poultices and potions; and the youngest, Marlinchen, is a flesh diviner, able to read people through the touch of their skin. When the girls sneak out to the ballet one night, Marlinchen catches the attention of the lead dancer, Sevastyan Reskin. Later, Sevastyan’s handler brings him to their home looking for a cure for his peculiar malady, and when Zmiy notices Marlinchen’s interest, he further tightens his grip on his daughters. Life within the Vashchenko house becomes ever more dangerous for the women—and life in Oblya isn’t any safer. There’s a monster plaguing the streets, and Marlinchen is especially haunted by the deaths. Reid fully embraces the darkness of the original tale while adding enough twists to make the story her own. Narrator Stina Nielsen conveys the horror that fuels this retelling of the Grimms' fairy tale "The Juniper Tree." Marlinchen, the youngest daughter of the twisted wizard Vashchenko, is kept captive in her dilapidated family home. She is forced to peddle her services as a flesh diviner, as she can read people's thoughts through touch. Nielsen communicates Marlinchen's desperate joy when her sisters take her to town, allowing her glimpses of different lives and possibilities. This visit sets off a monstrous chain of events, which Nielsen describes with precise pacing and just the right amount of suspense. Due to disturbing descriptions of sexual abuse and graphic violence, this lyrically told story may not appeal to all, but it is, nonetheless, a compelling and thoroughly enchanting listen. Stina Neilsen narrates Reid's (The Wolf and the Woodsman) gothic fairy-tale retelling with an affect that matches the grim quality of the story. She ably voices the na�vet� of the abused witch Marlinchen as she matures into both her strength and her sexuality and learns to change her fate. Listeners should suspect that a dark fantasy novel based on the fairy tale "The Juniper Tree" will take them to gruesome and violent places--and it does--but Reid adds additional real-world horrors as well. The dread-filled tension is sometimes alleviated by moments of whimsy and wonder and Reid's gorgeous writing style, but these moments will cause readers to worry even more about the fate of Marlinchen. Nielsen's ability to voice the beautiful prose is matched by her ability to take listeners to monstrous places and leave them unsure of exactly how events will play out even if they know how the original fairy tale ends. VERDICT Suggest to fans of horror and dark fantasy.--Matthew Galloway
