هذا الكتاب ليس سيرة ذاتية لشخص، كما قد يبدو من غلافه؛ بل سيرة ذاتية لمجتمع، ولثقافة مهيمنة على ذلك المجتمع. سيرة العم جابر (أصيل) تمثِّل سيرة (القبيلة) في الجزيرة العربية، وتحديدًا في ما قبل نشوء (الدولة) السعودية وبُعيد نشوئها. ضَغْط القبيلة بوصفها مكوِّنًا وجوديًّا للإنسان، وليس مجرد أحد عناصر هُويّته، هو الذي دفع فتى في عمر التاسعة أن يسير مدة ١٤ يومًا مشيًا على الأقدام، من شرق الجزيرة العربية إلى وسطها، ويتعرض خلال رحلته تلك إلى متاهة الرمال والأحراش، والذئاب والضباع، يفعل كل ذلك من أجل تأكيد الانتماء إلى قبيلته التي وُلد ونشأ بعيدًا عنها لدى قبيلة أخواله، حيث وصفه أحدهم في أثناء عراك أطفال بـ(الأجنبي)، فكانت هذه الكلمة التي جعلت الطفل يخوض رحلة انتحارية من أجل إعادة الاعتبار لنفسه! لكنَّ هذا البدوي العنيد الذي توقعنا أن يترعرع ليصبح (شيخ قبيلة) فاجأ كل من حوله -بمن فيهم قراء هذا الكتاب- ليتحول في منتصف عمره من (بدوي) إلى (قروي)، يقتني البقرة في بيته الطيني بعد أن كان شغوفًا برعي الإبل في الصحراء، ويعتني بالنخيل في بستان بيته بعد أن كان يعتني ببيت الشَّعر والأغنام. هل انتهت (القبيلة) وعصبياتها في مجتمعنا الآن؟ لا، لكنها لم تعد الوسيلة الوحيدة، ولا الوسيلة الأهم للتعبير عن الهوية ولإظهار الاعتداد. هذه الرواية/ السيرة مليئة بمعالم اجتماعية لإنسانٍ من أهل الجزيرة العربية استجاب بإرادته، القوية دومًا، لتحولات مجتمع الجزيرة العربية من الارتهان للقبيلة والبداوة إلى فضاء الدولة والمدنية، لكن مع إصرار صلب لديه في الإبقاء على (قيم) أساسية غير خاضعة للتنازل! زياد الدريس
