About the Author-
مؤرّخ إنكليزي من أصل لبنانيّ (1915-1993) متخصّص في تاريخ العرب والشرق الأوسط. درس في جامعة أكسفورد الفلسفة والسياسة والاقتصاد والتاريخ. تخرّج عام 1936 وكان الأوّل على دفعته. التحق بالجامعة الأميركية ببيروت فدرّس العلوم السياسية والتاريخ بين 1937-1939. مع اندلاع الحرب العالمية الثانية، عمل في المعهد الملكي للشؤون الدولية في بريطانيا، ثمّ في المكتب البريطاني لوزير الدولة في القاهرة. درّس مادّة تاريخ الشرق الأوسط الحديث في جامعة أكسفورد حتّى تقاعده عام 1979، كما كان أستاذًا في جامعات شيكاغو وبنسلفانيا وهارفرد. من أبرز مؤّلفاته «تاريخ الشعوب العربية» الذي اعتمدته جامعات عديدة حول العالم، و«الفكر العربيّ في عصر النهضة 1798-1939»، فضلًا عن «سوريا ولبنان» و«الأقلّيات في العالم العربي» و«الإسلام في الفكر الأوروبي».
