Fans of James Dashner's Maze Runner series will love this postapocalyptic adventure about a girl who must survive an alien planet in order to save the Earth.
Ana only knows her name because of the tag she finds pinned to her jumpsuit. Waking in the featureless compartment of a rocket ship, she opens the hatch to discover that she has landed on a barren alien world. Instructions in her pocket tell her to observe and to survive, no doubt with help from the wicked-looking knives she carries on her belt. But to what purpose?
Meeting up with three other teens—one boy seems strangely familiar—Ana treks across the inhospitable landscape, occasionally encountering odd twists of light that carry glimpses of people back on Earth. They're working on some sort of problem, and the situation is critical. What is the connection between Ana's mission on this planet and the crisis back on Earth, and how is she supposed to figure out the answer when she can't remember anything?

Excerpts-
  • From the book One
    00:27:52:29
This is how she wakes. There is a heavy pressure on her chest and a dull weight in her legs. Her mouth feels like cotton and the air is stale. Her eyes are glued shut.
No . . . not glued. She thinks they might open, if she tries.
    She tries.
Her eyes are open now, but she can't see any difference. The room—is it a room?—is pitch-black, a solid wall of dark.
    Flash!
A pulse of red light explodes in the darkness. She clamps her eyes shut again, but the brightness scours the backs of her lids. She takes quick, shallow breaths as the burst of light fades.
Flash! Another takes its place, then another.
Behind closed lids, her eyes are starting to adjust. She forces them back open. Fiery light-shadows streak around her, shadows that look alive.
    Flash!
She shifts her head and looks down, trying to assess her condition in these quick bloody snapshots hemmed in by viscous darkness.
She's strapped to a padded chair with armrests and a propped-up leg support that goes out past her feet. A dark band stretches across her upper thighs; another two crisscross her chest. She arches her body, pushing against the bands, but there's no give. She can feel her skin starting to bruise and she slows her frantic efforts. There has to be a way out of this.
    Flash!
The room is as round as a bucket, skinny with a high, dome-shaped ceiling but otherwise empty. She digs her fingers into the strap across her thighs and tries to pry it up. Nothing. With her fingertips she follows the band to the edges of her chair. Like a seat belt, maybe that's what these are? But she can find no spring-release button.
    Flash!
    What's going on?
    Flash!
    Where am I?
    Flash!
The pulses are coming from somewhere to her left. She reaches out in the direction of the light, feeling for the wall. There! She finds something flat and round. A button. She pushes her palm against it.
The belts around her chest and the wide one on her thighs snap open. There's a sudden sharp pricking below her waist, almost like something pulling out of her skin. She catches the band that was on her lower body and sees a row of long, thin prongs along the underside. On the front of the belt is a row of fine print, one label assigned to each prong: ELIMINATION . . . FLUID . . . LIFE SUPPORT . . .
A violent shudder ripples through her body. What is going on?
Letting go of the belt, she bends forward at the waist and stretches her ankles and knees, groaning as her muscles shift position for the first time in what feels like quite a while.
A second later, the red light on the wall goes off and a flashing green one takes its place. She turns her head to the left and sees that the green light is coming from a second button, right next to the first.
Is this some kind of a game? Her heart beats faster as she presses the new button.
Bright white light floods the room. She throws her hands over her eyes, but the light pushes through her fingers and cuts into her. Too bright. Too white.
    And that's when she notices.
Her mind is white, too. Blank.
It's strange, because she can picture and name all the objects in her little room—the chair, the walls, the seat belts. She stretches her mind and thinks of cars, computers, pepperoni pizza, ice-cold root beer. But all these objects float like ghosts in her mind. There's no one in the car. The root beer has no flavor. The computer is static, its screen dark. She knows about all these things, but she doesn't know them. They are not attached to any memories.
What about her? Where does she come from?
    She blinks under her hands.
    Who am I?
With a shock she realizes that she has no idea. Here's what she knows about her...

    April 15, 2013
The fate of two worlds hangs in the balance in this unorthodox science-fiction thriller. She wakes in restraints with no memory of where or even who she is. Learning her name is Ana from a name tag, she discovers a handwritten letter telling her that she's awakening from suspended animation in a rocket on a new planet, Paradox. She has a limited amount of time to get to a specific place on an electronic map, and she's also been provided supplies to get there. Hoping that answers to her missing memory lie at the intended destination, she sets out across a barren landscape only to be attacked by a giant, monstrous worm. Escaping it, she discovers Todd, who appears to have also come from the rocket, and before long, they meet Ysa and Chen. The group trek through dangers, but Ana is beset by memories of a very different life...and then she wakes again. The odd construction of Paquette's present-tense thriller can leave readers feeling as confused as the main character. The often slow-moving, descriptive main text is punctuated by news articles about the discovery of the planet and subsequent missions to it and by the off-puttingly melodramatic memories of an Earth scientist. The reveal is interesting if wholly unbelievable. The science behind this fiction is ludicrous, but patient fans of the genre may enjoy the twists. (Science fiction. 9-14)

Gr 7-10-Ana wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of who she is or why she is wearing a timer that is counting down. She finds a letter informing her that she is on the way to planet Paradox and has undergone surgical amnesia. She meets Todd, who tells her that the timer is how long they have to reach a safe colony and also claims to have had his memory wiped. They eventually meet Chen and Ysa, who have their memories. They know Ana, but refuse to tell her anything about her past. A giant worm with rows and rows of razor sharp teeth that stalks them through their expedition only exacerbates their treacherous journey. In addition to Ana's story, there is also a smattering of newspaper clippings that helps readers understand why Ana and the others have been sent to this planet. Through these pieces, they learn Earth is falling apart due to a virulent infection that starts by targeting difficult memories and spreads quickly. The story moves slowly at times, and many of the events are rushed. Parts of the plot aren't particularly strong, including a forced love story. Most of the characters seem more like caricatures than actual people, except for Ana.-Kristyn Dorfman, The Packer Collegiate Institute, Brooklyn, NY

Grades 7-10 Ana wakes up aboard a spaceship on an unfamiliar planet with a note informing her that she has surgical retrograde amnesia. Indeed, as she begins to explore, she finds she has no idea who she is or why she is therethough her muscle memory indicates that she has experience rock climbing and fighting. Soon she meets up with three other teen voyagers, all of whom are aware that they have 27 hours to reach a human colony on the coast before something dreadful happens. Their treacherous journey is further complicated in two ways: Ana begins to experience slivers of memory about a superflu brought back by the first explorers of this planet, and the teens are being pursued by a gigantic, sharp-toothed worm: Long white teeth raging out of a cloud of reddish-brown dust. Paquette's main characters and primary action feel a bit perfunctory. However, the backstory, initially revealed through interspersed newspaper articles, presents the intriguing notion of memories as a kind of infection. The result is a delayed, but eventually worthwhile, payoff.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2013, American Library Association.)

A deadly post-apocalyptic virus, amnesia, and a brilliant girl who has to battle both--this novel dives in with urgency. The narrative's lightning pace, effective characterization, and clever world-building keep readers guessing and intrigued as much as Ana, the protagonist in whose hands the world rests. Despite a rather clichid premise, this suspenseful adventure will draw readers in.
