Maile Carpenter is the founding editor in chief of Food Network Magazine, the best-selling monthly magazine in the U.S., and The Pioneer Woman Magazine, a new magazine launched in 2017 with cookbook author, Food Network star and social-media phenom Ree Drummond. Gr 3-7-This title is formatted much like the monthly Food Network Magazine. Tempting photos and clean layouts draw readers in to the book. Sections include muffins and quick breads, brownies and bars, cupcakes, cookies, and cakes. The most innovative section is the "Fake-Out Cakes." These cakes are made to look like other food items (the Grilled Cheese Cake presentation is amazing!) and aficionados of Kids Baking Championship on the Food Network will recognize this concept from a popular challenge on the show. All of the recipes are simple to follow, require basic kitchen equipment, and easy-to-find ingredients. The recipes are pretty standard fare, though a few are original, like Milk and Cookies Cupcakes. The tone of the book is geared toward beginner to intermediate bakers. The back matter features tips and tricks, as well as coloring pages and games. A complete index of all recipes is helpful. VERDICT Recommended for purchase. This title would be great for families who bake as a hobby, or for a scout troop to use for projects.-Jami Livingston, Adair Cty. P.L., Kirksville, MO
