The Roly Polies are a family of not particularly attractive bugs that live under a variety theater. All members of the family wear striped or brightly printed clothing and they each have a special talent. They are all great stars of the stage—dancers, actors, singers, and magicians. One day a talent scout flea comes to town looking for new stars. Demonstrating that life must be approached with creativity, this story illustrates the importance of not judging by appearances.

    Roly-Polies

A very, very long time ago, in a city very, very far away, in a very, very noisy building, lived a very, very big family of roly-polies:

    “The Poly family”.

There were no less than 55 of them, and although back in the good old days there had been as many as 79 of them, I promise you that 55 isn’t a bad number at all.

“The Poly family” lived in the basement of a very tall building. Their house was very damp and had hardly any light, but that was just fine for a family of roly-polies.

It was a very big house. It didn’t have many rooms, but they were big. Grandma roly-poly had always liked wide, open spaces, and so she’d never allowed any walls to be built.

Roly-polies aren’t the most attractive of creatures. They don’t have any pretty colours on their bodies, or long legs, or big eyes, or even long hair. Instead, they’re chubby, which is another way of saying short and fat. And they’re a very dull gray. Of course, grey isn’t an ugly colour, but it isn’t pretty either, it’s just a color that isn’t really a color …

Although, when the sun shines on a roly-poly, their body shines a little … but only a little. They’ve got eight pairs of very, very stumpy legs, and they’re anything but fast. Their head is tiny, with two curved feelers, and their eyes are just two tiny dots. “Poor old roly-polies!” you must be saying to yourself, “what ugly little things!”

As they haven’t got any hair, girl roly-polies are mad about wigs

Some roly-polies like to wear make-up on their bodies to make them more colorful and more attractive.

Sunbathing doesn’t give them a better color, although it warms up their little accordion-shaped bodies

OK, they’re chubby, but we’re comparing them with nothing less than an elegant dragonfly

But I still haven’t told you the most wonderful, incredible and extraordinary thing about these little creatures:

THEY CAN CURL UP INTO A BALL!

They can turn their body into a little ball and roll along, like a marble, like a bead, like an olive, like a yo-yo, or like the letter “O” when it falls out of a book.

    Roll, roll, roll …

“The Poly family” had a special talent. Great-great Grandpa, realizing that they weren’t particularly attractive creatures, decided that all the members of his family would wear a piece of clothing with stripes or a nice, bright print. Apart from making his family stand out from the rest, it would liven up their grey little bodies. And each and every one of them, without exception, had to learn to read and write.

Now, as I said before, the Poly family lived in a very noisy house, because right above the roof of their home was “THE GRAND VARIETY THEATER”

“The Grand Variety Theater” was a cabaret. The greatest stars from the world of show business appeared on its stage. The theater opened at night, and was very noisy, with the sound of music, voices, laughter and breaking glasses. And so, to get around the problem, the Poly family decided to sleep during the day, when the theater was closed, and live their lives at night.

Carretero breaks many of the rules of picture book construction: her narrative wanders, her plot is all prologue, and her characters are insects whose primary distinction is the ability to roll themselves up into little balls. Also, "they're chubby, which is another way of saying short and fat. And they're a very dull gray." Despite these shortcomings, an engaging voice ("Sunbathing... warms up their little accordion-shaped bodies") and cute-as-a-bug artwork carry readers through encyclopedic background about the roly-
polies' dwelling place underneath the Grand Variety Theater and their entry into the world of performance; a flea impresario offers them the chance to put together a traveling show ("Although she was most comfortable working with insects, she had discovered some truly amazing mammal acts"). There, disappointingly, the book ends, just as the action promises to heat up. The book is a little like a variety show itself, with short appearances by many different roly-poly family members (dramatic singers Castor and Eurydice, the great magician "Butterbean"), and a wealth of costumes and props. Offbeat but charming entertainment. Ages 5–7.

A multitalented family of googly-eyed bugs lives underneath the Grand Variety Theatre. They're called roly-polies; or, more properly, the Poly family. They're only an inch tall, with big eyes, a snout, feelers and 16 legs. (The two each stands on wear shoes.) Carretero's breakdown of roly-poly anatomy resembles a lab chart. For ease of movement, they can roll up into a ball. Like their aboveground human counterparts, the roly-polies are savvy performers, each with unique, brightly colored ensembles. They include: Maggie the Mouth, a captivating storyteller; Castor and Eurydice, dramatic superstars of the stage; lounge singer Ramon Bonbon, who sports a Salvador Dalí moustache; dancer Glamorous Gabrielle; magicians Izzy and Whizzy; and many more. One day, a visitor changes their lives forever. A flamboyant flea named Hopping Henrietta arrives on a messenger pigeon all the way from Moscow and exhorts the roly-polies to see the world as travelling performers. Henrietta is an artists' agent, you see. At last, the Poly family is able to fulfill great-great Grandpa's dream to have their own troupe! Carretero's imagination is loopy and delicious; her cheeky, multi-colored illustrations have a dash of Gahan Wilson. As the bulk of the book is set up and description of the different bugs, it's awfully light on actual story. An excess of whimsy doesn't make up for absence of plot. (Picture book. 6-9)

  • Kids' Home Library (April 13, 2011) "Rolie-Polies is a truly fun story that teaches that seemingly plain 'people' can be chock-full of creativity and talent. It's also a must-read for young fans of the little creatures."
