About the Author-
Ellery Lloyd is the pseudonym for the London-based husband-and-wife writing team of Collette Lyons and Paul Vlitos. Collette is a journalist and editor, the former content director of Elle (UK), and editorial director at Soho House. She has written for the Guardian, the Telegraph, and the Sunday Times. Paul is the author of two previous novels, Welcome to the Working Week and Every Day Is Like Sunday. He is a Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Greenwich. They are the authors of People Like Her and The Club.

Starred review from February 28, 2022 This masterly thriller from the pseudonymous Lloyd (People like Her) effectively delays revealing who among the large cast of characters has died violently. Ned Groom has created exclusive clubs around the world for the elite of the elite, who pay huge sums to have their every whim catered to. Groom has just launched his most spectacular branch yet, on a private island 90 minutes from London, accessible by car only by a causeway at low tide. Its amenities include Poseidon, a fishbowl-like restaurant with views of the surrounding sea. The prologue, in which two unidentified people in a Land Rover halfway across the causeway realize they aren’t going to make it as the tide rapidly rises, is followed by a Vanity Fair article, “Murder on the Island,” which describes Poseidon patrons noticing a submerged Land Rover and its grim contents outside the window. That development and the discovery of a body on the island turn “the party of the year” into “the murder mystery of the decade.” Flashbacks provide an array of suspects and motives. Lloyd (husband-and-wife writing team Collette Lyons and Paul Vlitos) makes the reader care about even unappealing characters, and the payoff is completely satisfying. Fans of Ruth Ware’s One by One will be riveted. Agent: Hillary Jacobson, ICM Partners.

An elite group of clubs all have "home" in their names. The newest and most lavish one--Island Home--is opening, and only those at the pinnacle of their career are invited for the weekend. Opening this resort has strained the Home Group, and its quirky and enigmatic CEO has reached the breaking point. The membership fee has just gone up, and not everyone is happy about it. Set on an exclusive island accessible only at low tide with a single road, it is the perfect setting for a murder with lots of twists and turns. Narrator Tamaryn Payne has a delightful British accent, but listeners may find this challenging to follow since the book moves from Vanity Fair coverage of the weekend, to lots of details and descriptions of Island Home and its furnishings, and lots of juicy details about the main characters. VERDICT Recommended for large public libraries and those where the Reese Book Club books are popular.--Gretchen Pruett
