About the Author-
Farzon A. Nahvi is an ER physician at Concord Hospital in Concord, New Hampshire, and a clinical assistant professor of emergency medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. Prior to this, he worked as an ER physician and clinical assistant professor of emergency medicine at the Mount Sinai Health System, NYU Langone Health, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and the Manhattan VA. He is a graduate of Cornell University and NYU Grossman School of Medicine. He has written for TheNew York Times, TheWashington Post, The Guardian, Daily News (New York), New York magazine, and other publications. In April 2019, he testified as an expert witness before Congress in the nation's first Medicare for All hearing.

Nahvi, an emergency-room physician at Concord Hospital in New Hampshire, provides insight into emergency medicine by taking listeners along for one of his shifts. The emergency room is similar to a library, with both operating on the "everyone is welcome here" maxim. ER patients have the right to be treated until they are "stable" and can be released. Nahvi narrates the author's note, and then the highly capable Aden Hakimi takes over, superbly depicting the chaos and uncertainty in the ER with a measured tone. Hakimi sensitively guides listeners through the ups and downs of a typical shift in a place where very little is typical. "Code gray" is the area outside well-documented and trained procedures. Nuance and analysis are key features, and Hakimi excels at helping listeners understand the medical ethics and personal decisions that make for skilled doctors. A moving work that asks listeners to pause, think, struggle, and consider different perspectives. VERDICT Told with candor and compassion, this well-narrated book should not be missed by anyone who is interested in the ethics and the real-life experiences of medical personnel.--Christa Van Herreweghe

Dr. Nahvi processes a myriad of experiences as an emergency room doctor, and narrator Aden Hakimi effectively channels the author's reflectiveness and compassion. Just like the doctor we would wish for in a crisis, Hakimi sounds assured and calm as he delivers terrible stories with careful attention and kindness. Dr. Nahvi puts himself in others' shoes: What would it be like for a husband to enter the ER and see that no one is trying to revive his wife? It's a compelling listen with Hakimi's perfect tone and pacing as he navigates us through the stories of people who end up in the ER because they can't afford healthcare or they're homeless.
