June 1, 2010 Multimedia Review Staff Video/DVD Art-General Laurence Gartel: Digital Media Artist. DVD. 13:35 min. Crystal Prods. 2009. ISBN 978-1-56290-631-3. $39.95.
Gr 9 UpThis short documentary spotlights digital media artist Laurence Gartel and his work in an interview format as he discusses his processes and digital media in general. Gartel is considered by many to be the father of digital media. He takes a photo and, using different computer software, enhances it to create a unique piece of art. His favorite piece, "Coney Island Baby," is a collage of parts of photos that speak to the history of Coney Island. Every line of this wonderfully constructed visual feast takes the eye from detail to detail to create the feel of action while vibrant colors create a kaleidoscope of motion and mood. Among his influences are Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, and Nam June Paik. He admonishes aspiring artists to "make some noise" and constantly push the limits of comfort to be successful. For over 30 years, Gartel's art has evolved to show a time line of the most recent advances in technology that are used to enhance his original photos. This film introduces a digital genius and an art form that will be appealing to students."Jeana Actkinson, ESC XI Regional Service Center, Ft. Worth, TX"

July 1, 2010 In Nest, Amy and Dan learn some unpleasant truths about their family's lineage while trying to evade the Holts in South Africa (among other places). Code finds the sibs dramatically separated in China. Warning takes them to the Caribbean--and a showdown with the man in black. The series continues to spit out compulsively readable, if slight, tales of adventure.
